Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

This week, I want to highlight two outstanding examples of dedication.

The TTC is a people business. Our purpose is simple, but powerful: to get people where they need to go, safely, reliably and efficiently. While this mission relies on a vast network of infrastructure, vehicles and technology, it ultimately depends on the dedication of our people, who work every day to deliver transit for millions across Toronto and beyond.

This week, I want to highlight two outstanding examples of that dedication.

On Tuesday, I had the privilege of visiting our Wheel-Trans team at Lakeshore facility. What struck me most was how the operation feels like a family business, where the team works with pride and compassion to serve our most vulnerable customers. Providing public transit to seniors and people with disabilities requires a specialized service and exceptional people to run it.

I joined Suzette Rowe, one of our exemplary operators, on a ride with Beverley, a customer with mobility and health challenges. Beverley told me that without Wheel-Trans, she wouldn’t be able to leave her home. Wheel-Trans is her lifeline to family, services and recreation. I also met Spider, whose scheduled trips are essential for accessing care at an adult day program.

Now in its 50th year, Wheel-Trans is world-class and comparable to the best paratransit systems globally. It's a lifeline for thousands, carrying more than 3.5 million riders over 27 million kilometres last year. To every member of the Wheel-Trans team: thank you for your professionalism, compassion and commitment. As a reminder, we’re officially celebrating Wheel-Trans’ 50th anniversary at Lakeshore Division on Saturday, September 6. Hope to see you all there.

Earlier this week, the King and Church intersection reopened after major construction. Despite starting three weeks behind schedule due to water main construction delays, our Streetcar Infrastructure team delivered renewed tracks and overhead power on time. Their co-ordination and dedication with our City counterparts ensured minimal disruption to service and traffic. Thanks also to Streetcar Transportation and Closures and Diversions staff for delivering an efficient diversion around the affected area. Most importantly, throughout the construction, we made sure that Wheel-Trans service remained available where local traffic was permitted.

Moments like these remind us that our work is about moving people, not just vehicles. Thank you for your continued commitment to excellence as we build a transit system that reflects the best of this city.

With gratitude and resolve,

Mandeep S. Lali
